Bob Schieffer, who’d been leaning toward retiring after the election, has inked a new “long-term” deal with CBS News to continue as the network’s chief White House correspondent and “Face the Nation” anchor. Schieffer, 71, will also continue contributing to the “CBS Evening News” and “The Early Show” and to political/ campaign coverage.

In other news “news,” Emad Ashgar has been named EP of Ch. 5’s “Good Day New York.” He spent the last year at Ch. 11, while NY1’s Cheryl Wills has received a media service award from the Key Women of America.

And Ch. 2’s Max Gomez receives the Excellence in Healthcare Reporting award tomorrow at the HHC Foundation of New York’s annual benefit breakfast (Cipriani’s).

Sunday’s “Desperate Housewives” season finale rallied a bit, pulling in nearly 17 million viewers (9-11 p.m.) and giving ABC its largest audience, excluding Sunday Oscars, since November 2006.
