‘Chuck’ Episode 3.06: ‘Chuck Versus The Nacho Sampler’ Recap

Title: “Chuck Versus the Nacho Sampler”

Story: Things are definitely progressing quickly for Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi), super spy-in-training. Just a week ago, he was making newbie mistakes on his first solo mission before finally getting the hang of tapping into the Intersect at will. This week he’s acquiring assets, going to Dubai… making some tough choices. Team Bartowski is tasked with finding out what a young computer geek named Manoosh knows and what he’s working on. A connection to The Ring reveals itself, Manoosh slips away and a pursuit ensues which takes the team across the world. Meanwhile, Morgan (Joshua Gomez) and Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) become suspicious of Chuck’s increasingly erratic behavior, setting in motion a chain of events that are sure to have repercussions throughout the rest of the season.

Poor Chuck: By the end of the episode, one fact is very clear: there is no happy ending for Chuck Bartowski. Manoosh’s plight is almost identical to what Chuck went through when he was first brought into the CIA fold. Only the hapless Ring lackey is duped and cornered into making some very wrong choices. While Chuck continues to develop as a spy, we can see some of the sweet, innocence that makes him so easy to relate to being chipped away at by the events of this latest adventure. There’s always been an underlying tragedy to this series, as an average kid has his quiet, safe life stolen away from him against his will, but it comes bubbling to the surface here.

Homeland Security: Buy More newcomer Hannah (Kristin Kreuk) has turned out to be a red herring so far, but the real world side of Chuck’s life sees some interesting new developments as well. Ellie and Morgan have separate revelations about Chuck and his odd behavior, and they agree to watch him more closely moving forward. Morgan even goes as far as tasking Jeff (Scott Krinsky) and Lester (Vik Sahay) with tailing Chuck, and gathering what information they can. This will not go well.

Missing Persons: New Team Bartowski leader, Agent Shaw (Brandon Routh), is strangely absent from the episode. Maybe he took some time off?

Strange Days: Until the past couple episodes, the series has mainly concerned itself with the tension between Chuck and Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski), as well as the trouble Chuck has separating his real life from his secret one. Now, he seems to be getting a handle on the dark side of the spy game, the lying and the sacrifice. There’s less whining about Sarah and more secret identity damage control. Still, their coupling continues to be foreshadowed. Perhaps I was a little off up top where I said that there’s no happy ending for our man Chuck. There could be one, but he’s going to go through hell to get there and it’s not going to be what he might have imagined before the Intersect came into his life.
